Police to control crowds for NH festival, smokers

KEENE, N.H. (AP) - An estimated 40,000 people are expected at this year's Keene Pumpkin Festival, and police will be out in force to see that just the jack-o-lanterns are lighting up.
For more than a month, dozens of people have gathered daily at Central Square to light marijuana joints and pipes to protest drug laws. They do so at the spot where organizers of the Keene Pumpkin Festival locate their signature tower of pumpkins.
Up until now, police have held off on making drug arrests at the square. Police have discussed how they will respond, haven't made the details public.
County Attorney Peter Heed said his office has been talking with police about Saturday's event.
Suzanne Woodward, director of the nonprofit putting on the Pumpkin Festival, says she's not worried about protesters affecting the festival.
