The seventh hurricane in the eastern Pacific basin of the 2009 season has exploded into a Category 4 hurricane with winds of 135 mph. Currently 250 miles southwest of Acapulco, Mexico, the National Hurricane Center forecasts the storm could strike the Baja California peninsula next week.
The National Hurricane Center said the storm “continues to intensify at a remarkable pace.” The storm has grown from a Category 1 to a Category 4 storm in only 36 hours. Fed by the warm waters of the Pacific and without any shear to control it, Rick is considered ‘extremely dangerous’ and could strengthen into a Category 5 storm tonight with winds in excess of 155 mph.
